The Directorate of Capacity Development and Consultancy Services (KU-CDCS) partnered with the School of Business, Economics and Tourism (Kenyatta University), International Committee for Development of Peoples (CISP), Cooperation Development Network (CDN), University of Pavia in Italy and the State Department for Planning in the National Treasury and Economic Planning (Kenya) among other actors to develop and implement a skills training curricula on Project Design, and Project Monitoring and Evaluation.

The training on Project Design was conducted from November 28 to December 2, 2022 while the short course on Project Monitoring and Evaluation was implemented from December 5-9, 2022. 

The short courses targeted staff of government, civil society organizations and development partners. It aimed at equipping the participants with the knowledge, skills and competencies for planning, designing, appraising, monitoring and evaluating development projects and programmes at national and county levels.

A total of 50 Economists drawn from the State Department for Planning in the National Treasury and Planning benefitted from the two courses.

Besides offering targeted skills training, the KU-CDCS has continued to engage with state and non-state actors in providing action-oriented consultancy services. Some of the active consultancy assignments being undertaken include provision of skills and employability training for youth under the Kenya Youth Empowerment Project (KYEOP), and Development of Criteria for Identification and Cataloguing of Water Towers in Kenya.

 INTRODUCTION

This is a short course in Basic German Language offered by Kenyatta University in collaboration with partners using phonetical-based approach. It aims to equip participants with proficiency in basic German language skills within a short period of time. This initiative responds directly to the Kenya Government’s desire to promote gainful employment by tapping onto the employment opportunities that exist in German labour market.

BACKGROUND

The Government of the Republic of Kenya has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Republic of Germany. The MoU seeks to promote access to the German labour market by skilled and semi-skilled Kenyans to partly fill the country’s skills gap of 250,000 workers annually.

As part of the Kenya Government’s commitment to promote productive and sustainable employment opportunities, especially to the youth, it has prioritized equipping them with employable skills for effective participation in the german labour market.

A key eligibility criterion is Proficiency in German Language to at least Level B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Towards this end, Kenyatta University has unveiled this short-course in Basic German Language to be offered at Levels A1, A2 and B1.

Why take a Short Course in Basic German Language at Kenyatta University.

The short course in Basic German Language offered by Kenyatta University is based on a well-designed and structured curriculum that enables learners to attain proficiency in basic German language within a short period of time. The course emphasizes practical communication skills, reading comprehension and grammatical skills required for day-to-day interactions in a German-speaking environment.

COURSE DELIVERY

The Basic German Language Programme will be offered at Levels A1, A2 and B1 with each level taking two months.   It will adopt a blended learning approach, incorporating both face-to-face interaction and online mode. The in-person mode will accommodate at most 40 students per class. It will be conducted in venues approved by Kenyatta University.

Simultaneously, there will be virtual lessons accessible to the participants through various platforms. This mix will ensure flexibility and outreach to majority of Kenyans. The initial Kenyatta University designated campuses for face-to-face learning are:

• Main Campus
• Nairobi City Campus
• Nakuru Campus
• Kitui Campus
• Mombasa Campus

Other centres to be opened on a need basis.

TRAINING FEES

Fees for various training levels is as indicated below:

1. Level A1; Level A2; or Level B1 only                   Ksh. 34,000/=
2. Level A1 to A2 or Level A2 to B1                        Ksh. 63,500/=
3. Level A1 to B1                                                     Ksh. 93,000/=     

EXAMINATION AND CERTIFICATION

Upon course completion, participants will have the opportunity to take the B1 German language exam, conducted by German Government recognized examination bodies. This certification is internationally recognized and will significantly enhance the employability of the graduates. There will be a separate cost for this external examination payable directly by the course participants to the examining body.

Kenyatta University (KU) in collaboration with the Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) have co-developed a five-day short course for policy makers and practitioners working in the Kenyan ASALs.

The objective of the course to strengthen the capacity of county and national government actors and NGOs to plan for the delivery of food and water security in the ASALs under conditions of increasing climate risk.

The course will focus on the interactions between production systems and the environment, good governance and sustainable resource management.

SHORT COURSE STRUCTURE

The course is delivered by the Directorate of Research Capacity Building and Consultancy Services at KU in collaboration with the Geography Department and invited expert guest speakers.

TARGET AUDIENCE 

This professional course will be of particular benefit to:

• Sectorial development and planning officers in national and county government

• Sectorial policy makers in national and county government

• Sectorial technical officers and practitioners at county level

Others include:

• Development partners operating in ASAL areas

• Local administrators/leaders in ASAL areas

• Community opinion leaders in ASAL areas

• Curriculum officers in Academic and Research Community

CERTIFICATION

A certificate of completion, signed by the Director, KU-RCBCS and Registrar (Academic) will be issued to participants upon successful attendance and participation in the training workshop.

DURATION AND COST

The short course lasts for five days and the cost is Ksh 50,000/- only (inclusive of VAT). This cost covers training and conference package. The primary training venue is Kenyatta University Conference Centre (KUCC). Please note this price does not include accommodation and travel costs and may vary depending on the venue/location of the training.
