The Directorate of Capacity Development and Consultancy Services (KU-CDCS) partnered with the School of Business, Economics and Tourism (Kenyatta University), International Committee for Development of Peoples (CISP), Cooperation Development Network (CDN), University of Pavia in Italy and the State Department for Planning in the National Treasury and Economic Planning (Kenya) among other actors to develop and implement a skills training curricula on Project Design, and Project Monitoring and Evaluation. The training on Project Design was conducted from November 28 to December 2, 2022 while the short course on Project Monitoring and Evaluation was implemented from December 5-9, 2022. The short courses targeted staff of government, civil society organizations and development partners. It aimed at equipping the participants with the knowledge, skills and competencies for planning, designing, appraising, monitoring and evaluating development projects and programmes at national and county levels. A total of 50 Economists drawn from the State Department for Planning in the National Treasury and Planning benefitted from the two courses.

Besides offering targeted skills training, the KU-CDCS has continued to engage with state and non-state actors in providing action-oriented consultancy services. Some of the active consultancy assignments being undertaken include provision of skills and employability training for youth under the Kenya Youth Empowerment Project (KYEOP), and Development of Criteria for Identification and Cataloguing of Water Towers in Kenya.

Title: “Working with Environmental Variability for Enhanced Water and Food Security in the Drylands”.
Kenyatta University (KU) in collaboration with the Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) have co-developed a five-day short course for policy makers and practitioners working in the Kenyan ASALs. The objective of the course to strengthen the capacity of county and national government actors and NGOs to plan for the delivery of food and water security in the ASALs under conditions of increasing climate risk. The course will focus on the interactions between production systems and the environment, good governance and sustainable resource management.
Short course structure
The course is delivered by the Directorate of Capacity Development and Consultancy Services at KU in collaboration with the Geography Department and invited expert guest speakers.
Target Audience
This professional course will be of particular benefit to:
i. Sectoral development and planning officers in national and county government
ii. Sectoral policy makers in national and county government
iii. Sectoral technical officers and practitioners at county level
Others include:
iv. Development partners operating in ASAL areas
v. Local administrators/leaders in ASAL areas
vi. Community opinion leaders in ASAL areas
vii. Curriculum officers in Academic and Research Community
Certification.
A certificate of completion, signed by the Director, KU-CDCS and Registrar (Academic) will be issued to participants upon successful attendance and participation in the training workshop.
Duration and Cost.
The short course lasts for five days and the cost is Ksh 50,000/- only (inclusive of VAT). This cost covers training and conference package. The primary training venue is Kenyatta University Conference Centre (KUCC). Please note this price does not include accommodation and travel costs and may vary depending on the venue/location of the training.

The Directorate of Capacity Development and Consultancy Services and Kenyatta University (KU- CDCS) submitted a Letter of Interest (LOI) to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) for possible funding on an Initiative of What Works for Women Economic Empowerment (IWWWEE) in Kenya. The University was shortlisted to submit a full proposal in November 2019.
The proposal writing process, which was interdisciplinary and involved partners outside the University led to submission of a grant proposal in April 2020. Upon evaluation, Kenyatta University won the largest research grant known in the country. The grant of USD 4,000,000 was awarded in September 2020 to establish a Hub on an Initiative of What Works for Women Economic Empowerment (IWWWEE) in Kenya. The Hub that is set for official launch is housed at the Centre for Gender Equity and Empowerment at Kenyatta University.
In other activities, KU-CDCS continued to offer training and consultancy services to both internal and external clients. Some of the consultancy services were offered such as Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO), Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Kenya Youth Employment Opportunity Project (KYEOP) and Kenya Water Towers Authority (KWTA). Training service was mainly offered to KEMRI. It involved training in Pedagogy and Andragogy with specific reference to “effective teaching for post graduate level students/ teaching skills for educators and setting examinations, and was offered to 22 participants. The training was conducted from 8 th to 10 th September 2020, at the KEMRI Training Hall in Nairobi City County. The KU-CDCS was also contracted by Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital (MNTRH) to facilitate the institution’s internal quality auditors training. The training was held at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Mathari campus from 14 th to 18 th September 2020. A total of 22 participants attended the course.
The KU-CDCS continues to cut a niche in conducting top-notch training and research-oriented consultancy services responsive to the highly competitive labour market environment. The Directorate boasts of internal pool of highly skilled, competent, dynamic and results-oriented internationally recognized researchers and trainers supported by a versatile team of staff.

The opening and closing sessions during the trainings were done in a plenary where all the groups were together before going into their respective training venues. These sessions were graced by the Deputy Commandant and Chief Instructor, Brigadier Patrick Muteti and Director KU-CDCS, Prof. Simon Onywere.
On his speech,The Deputy Commandant and Chief Instructor Brigadier Muteti, represented by Col. Oduor, emphasized the importance of ensuring that officers and instructors in KMA gain necessary knowledge and skills that would enable them discharge their duties diligently. He added the need to ensure that the participants realize value not just for funds spent to conduct the trainings, but also the time invested by every stakeholder in the process.
The Director Capacity Development and Consultancy Services, Prof. Simon Onywere while delivering His speech, started by passing greetings from KU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. P. K. Wainana to the leadership of KMA. He expressed appreciation on behalf of the University Management for the opportunity to offer services to the Academy. He noted the importance of the courses and the competences of the resource persons to deliver content; all geared towards ensuring that the instructors enhanced their skills by the end of the trainings.
