  • MR. JAMES OMBOGO ONDITI

Mr. James Ombogo Onditi is the current Manager Business Development at Kenyatta University Capacity Development and Consultancy Services Directorate since August 2018. Before this appointment, Mr. Onditi served in the same capacity under the Kenyatta University Consultancy Services Unit (KUCSU) (now de-established) form June 2016 to August 2018. Previous to joining KU, Mr. Onditi served at Kenya Industrial Estates Ltd (KIE) as Assistant Manager Business Development and Financial Services (September 2012 to June 2016 ), Acting Manager Business Development Department (May 2013 to January 2014), Senior Officer Risk Management (June 2011 to September 2012). While at KIE, James was instrumental in the process of setting up the Risk Management and Credit Appraisal procedures, he also helped in re-engineering business processes at the Business Development Department. He was in charge of client generation, credit appraisal and disbursement at the parastatal. Additionally, he undertook and managed a number of consultancies and Business Development Services (BDS) while at the KIE. Before joining KIE, Mr. Onditi served at Equity Bank Limited as a Supervisor Agency Banking and Acquiring Business Channels (ABC) (April 2010 to June 2011). He was pivotal in establishing the first banking agents for Equity Bank in Nairobi Eastern Region based at Donholm Branch. He also served as a Relationship Officer Credit (August 2008 to April 2010). As a credit officer, James set up the initial group lending credit portfolio for the branch.

Mr. Onditi holds a Masters of Business Administration (Strategic Management) (Project Title: Challenges of Strategy Implementation of Public Private Partnership(PPP) In Infrastructure Development at Rift Valley Railways Kenya Limited (RVR), 2014 available at: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?client=firefox-b-d&um=1&ie=UTF 8&lr&q=related:WdGsP1xtnUo1yM:scholar.google.com/) from the University of Nairobi (UON), Bachelor of Arts (Economics and Business) Degree from Kenyatta University (KU) and a Diploma in Information Management Systems (IMIS-UK) from Strathmore University. He is currently pursuing his PHD in Business Administration (Entrepreneurship) from the University of Nairobi. He is an Associate Member of the Marketing Society of Kenya (MSK).

James has also undertaken a number of short courses in management and transformative leadership, digital, social media marketing and Organizational Knowledge Management (KM). He has been trained in risk management framework, credit appraisal and management, business planning, budgeting and financing small and medium enterprises (SMEs). He is a certified Quality Management Systems (QMS) Internal Auditor ISO 2001:2015; and has also trained on Risk Based Thinking ISO 2001:2015.

He brings on board a wealth of experience in designing and implementing consultancy projects, training, proposal writing, contract negotiations, logistics coordination, and Risk and project management. Selected consultancy assignments he has participated in include:

  • Lead Expert for Kenyatta University in the Kenya Youth Employment and Opportunities Project (KYEOP): Delivery of job specific skills training in the formal sector Targeted Counties Additional trades cycle 1: Kwale, Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu. A project sponsored by World Bank and implemented by National Industrial Training Authority(NITA)-February 2018-on going;
  • Technical consultant in the Development of five year (5) strategic plan for the Public Relations Society of Kenya- January 2018-April 2018;
  • Project Manager for a training in Beyond Management to Leadership for Kenya Railways Board and Senior Management –September 2017;
  • Logistics and County Coordinator for a Study on Teacher Deployment and Utilization in Kenya (PRIDE Project) under the Ministry of Education Science and Technology and Teachers Service Commission (TSC)- May 2017-January2018;
  • Business Processes Consultant in Organizational Knowledge Management Capability and Needs Assessment for the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KeBS)- February 2017-April 2017;
  • Project Manager for Kenya Industrial Estates in the Implementation of mentorship program in Kakamega and Kisii Counties targeting 400 women entrepreneurs and 50 mentors funded by International Labor Organization (ILO)- June 2015 to December 2015;
  • Project Manager for Kenya Industrial Estates in the Implementation of GETAHEAD training in Kakamega, Kisii, Embu and Kitui Counties targeting 1200 enterprises funded by International Labor Organization (ILO)- April 2013 to June 2013;
  • Key consultant for the Development of Uwezo Fund Entrepreneurs training Manual and Trainers Guide for Uwezo Fund Board and Ministry of Devolution & Planning- April 2013 to June 2013.

His commitment to Leadership and Management extends beyond corporate governance to Community Service. Mr. Onditi is the current Chairperson (elected in April 2017) Board of Management (BOM) for Viwanda Housing Society Ltd (August 2017 to date). He previously served as the Vice-Chairperson of the Society from April 2015 to August 2017 and as Board member for Viwanda SACCO from April 2012- April 2016.

As the Manager Business Development at Kenyatta University Capacity Development and Consultancy Services Directorate, James’ key roles include:

  • Key liaison person for consultancy projects;
  • Enhancing university-industry linkages;
  • Proposal writing,
  • Participating in consultancies,
  • Consultancy project management,
  • Consultant teams and logistics coordination,
  • Creating and managing strong customer relationships in order to generate high volume of prospective clients,
  • Building a strong base for alternative income generation portfolio for the University.
